Athens is one of the more affordable capitals in western Europe, and it is honest about it in a way property portals are not. This is a plain account of what a month here actually costs in 2026, from the coffee to the rent, written by people who pay these prices rather than estimate them. Treat the numbers as ranges, not promises; the city moves, and so do you.
The headline: a comfortable single person spends noticeably less here than in London, Paris or Amsterdam, and eats better while doing it. Where the money goes is the interesting part.
The everyday costs
The small daily numbers are where Athens feels generous. A freddo espresso, the national drink, sits around a few euros and buys you a table for as long as you want it. A gyros lunch is famously cheap. A proper dinner out with wine costs a fraction of what the same evening runs in northern Europe. Groceries from the neighbourhood laiki, the weekly street market, are cheaper and better than the supermarket.

Transport, and why you skip the car
Public transport is inexpensive and, for most of the centre and the coast, enough. A monthly transport pass costs less than a tank of petrol, and it covers the metro, buses and the tram. The big one: rent
Housing is the number that swings the whole budget, and it depends entirely on how you rent. A furnished monthly apartment is not the same market as a bare long lease, and for stays of a few months it is usually the more sensible one: no deposit chain, no furnishing a flat you are leaving, no setting up and closing utility accounts. That last point is where the honesty lives. A stay is not flatly all-inclusive, and anyone promising that is rounding up somewhere. The estimate is sized to normal use; a mild month costs you the quoted price, a heavy winter of heating costs a little more, and you only ever pay for the extra you actually burned.
The city is cheap. The rent is whatever you make it.
